Northern California's coastline is as varied as you can get! You'll find everything from long sandy beaches to rocky cliffs that drop straight off into the sea. And whether you're standing on a cliff watching for whales, exploring tidepools amongst rocky outcrops, or relaxing on the beach, there are two sources of danger: the rip current (sometimes called "rip tide"), and the sneaker wave.
A rip current is like a river running through the ocean, and the current can be very strong. A sneaker wave is an unexpectedly larger-than-usual wave that comes out of nowhere.
So how do you protect yourself and your family from these dangers? By following these 7 simple tips:
Keep an eye on your children and keep them close to you at all times. Don't let them go wading or exploring without you.
Look for signs posted (like, "Strong Current" or "No Swimming"). Heed their advice because they were posted for a reason.
Remember that most Northern California beaches don't have lifeguards. If there is one, ask if there are any dangerous areas to watch for.
Watch the wave patterns for 15 or 20 minutes before getting too close. Make sure you know how high up the tide is coming.
Assume that the ocean is dangerous. You'll be absolutely correct!
Always keep an eye on the ocean. If something seems strange, move away.
And, above all, never turn your back on the ocean!
The coastline of Northern California is one of the most beautiful in the world, and the beaches are unsurpassed for variety and interest as well as beauty. There's absolutely no reason you can't enjoy them in perfect safety, as long as you remember these 7 tips!
