BIG SUR PRIVATE CAMPGROUNDS

BIG SUR PRIVATE CAMPGROUNDS OFFER ALL THE AMENITIES

Not quite into the whole hiking-in to sleep in a pup tent on the ground and making your morning coffee over a campstove for your next visit to Big Sur?

But, still . . . you'd really like to have that out-of-doors, I'm communing with nature thing going on. Well, Big Sur's private campgrounds are exactly what you're looking for then! A little pricier than other campgrounds, but you know what they say - you get what you pay for!

BIG SUR CAMPGROUND & CABINS

Big Sur Campground is the perfect family-campground-type compound with hot showers, store, laundry, & activities. There's something for everyone at this lovely example of Big Sur private campgrounds! It's situated in a Redwood forest, right along Big Sur River - I don't know where you'll find a more beautiful spot! The facility is open all year and reservations are necessary.

The options at Big Sur Campground are practically endless. There are tent campsites with a firepit & picnic table; tent cabins with a queen-size bed, linens & blankets; RV sites with hook-ups, firepit & picnic table; and fully-stocked cabins for the "lazy" camper (or maybe it's "smart" camper).

The draw at this Big Sur private campground:

  • Tubing on the Big Sur River
  • Camping in the forest, but with all the ammenities
  • Lots & lots of things to do

FERNWOOD RESORT

Fernwood Resort is another all-purpose compound with the added benefit of a motel, tavern, restaurant, and espresso bar. Located amongst the redwoods along the Big Sur River, it's open year-round, and reservations are necessary.

You'll find a variety of accommodations at this Big Sur private campground: tent camping sites; RV sites with hook-ups; and tent cabins; as well as the motel. There are 2 bath houses with hot showers, and there's even WiFi available, so you can bring your work along. (Just kidding about the work!! You want to keep in touch with family, right?)

Why Fernwood?

  • Beautiful setting with river and Redwoods with proximity to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
  • Every creature comfort you could ever want
  • It's home to the Albino Redwood (a rare phenomenon, this Redwood tree has no chlorophyll and it's needles are white)
  • Weekend music events

RIVERSIDE CAMPGROUND & CABINS

Riverside offers tent camping sites with picnic tables & fire pits, RV sites with picnic tables & fire pits, and cabins in an idyllic setting amongst the Redwoods along the Big Sur River. And - get this! - they even offer on-site massages. How decadent is that!! This Big Sur private campground is open all year and you will need reservations.

There are 45 camping sites and 11 cabins with shared or private decks, and hook-ups for your RVing comfort. You'll find clean restrooms, showers, & laundry facilities, plus lots of activities like fishing (seasonal), tubing & swimming in the river, and hiking nearby.

The draw for Riverside Campground:

  • There's nothing like a good massage after a day of hiking!
  • Redwoods & river - a great combination
  • Proximity to the shops & restaurants of Big Sur

TREEBONES RESORT

Treebones Resort is a truly unique experience! This charming Big Sur private campground is positioned on a bluff overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean, there's not a bad view in the place. Remember I mentioned camping in a yurt? Here's the place! In addition to the views and the yurts, there are campsites, a restaurant, and something new - a "human nest" created by Jayson Fann. Open all year and reservations are necessary.

You'll find 16 beautiful yurts - fabric walls & roof around a wood lattice frame - furnished & cozy; 5 campsites; a heated swimming pool & spa, a store, and a central Guest Services building for showers and laundry.

Why stay at Treebones?

  • Bragging rights: "Oh, didn't I mention? We stayed in a yurt." (Spoken in a very casual tone, of course.)
  • Spectacular views of the Pacific, especially sitting on the deck of your yurt with a cocktail in hand - they call them "Sundowners" in Africa - while, appropriately, the sun drops into the sea
  • The warm & friendly ambience created by the owners and staff

VENTANA CAMPGROUND

Special Note: Ventana Campground - one of the most popular of Big Sur private campgrounds - is closed during the 2008 season for renovations. Check the website link below periodically for for their re-opening announcement. In the meantime, here's what I know about them.

Ventana Campground is popular for the privacy of its campsites. Located along Post Canyon & Post Creek, the camp is widely scattered through a dense Redwood forest, up and down side canyons, and along ridges. It's open year-round and reservations are needed.

Each of Ventana's 80 campsites is different from the others, but all contain a fire ring, a picnic table, and nearby drinkable water. There's a small campstore, and 3 bath houses with flush toilets, electricity, and hot showers.

Reasons to choose Ventana Campground:

  • Seclusion and privacy of campsites
  • Beautiful Redwood forest setting
  • Proximity to Big Sur's beaches & hiking trails, plus it's not far from the restaurants, shops, & taverns of Big Sur
