I LOVE CAMPING AT BIG SUR STREAMSIDE CAMPGROUNDS
Do you love falling asleep to the sounds of gurgling water in a brook or stream? Love to be able to take a little dip after a long hike, or float on a raft or tube? How about trout fishing? Then you'll really love these Big Sur campgrounds!

The options at Big Sur Campground are practically endless. There are tent campsites with a firepit & picnic table; tent cabins with a queen-size bed, linens & blankets; RV sites with hook-ups, firepit & picnic table; and fully-stocked cabins for the "lazy" camper (or maybe it's "smart" camper). The draw at this camp: - Tubing on the Big Sur River
- Camping in the forest, but with all the ammenities
- Lots & lots of things to do
FERNWOOD RESORT Fernwood Resort is another all-purpose compound with the added benefit of a motel, tavern, restaurant, and espresso bar. Located amongst the redwoods along the Big Sur River, it's open year-round, and reservations are necessary. You'll find a variety of accommodations at this Big Sur streamside campground: tent camping sites; RV sites with hook-ups; and tent cabins; as well as the motel. There are 2 bath houses with hot showers, and there's even WiFi available, so you can bring your work along. (Just kidding about the work!! You want to keep in touch with family, right?) Why Fernwood? - Beautiful setting with river and Redwoods with proximity to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
- Every creature comfort you could ever want
- It's home to the Albino Redwood (a rare phenomenon, this Redwood tree has no chlorophyll and it's needles are white)
- Weekend music events
PFEIFFER BIG SUR STATE PARK Special Note: Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground is reopened to camping & day use. Reservations are recommended because of its popularity & because there are fewer campsites available throughout Big Sur this year. Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground is one of the most popular of all the Big Sur streamside campgrounds - people come here to enjoy the beautiful forests, the flower-filled meadows, the streams and rivers, the hiking and nature study that everyone finds so spectacular in Big Sur. The Big Sur River runs through and some of the campsites run along the river. Don't feel like camping this trip? Try the Big Sur Lodge, located in the park. Usually Pfeiffer is open year-round for camping (see Special Note above), and reservations are recommended. There are 204 camping sites for either tent or RV (no hook-ups for RVs) scattered throughout the camp area, and each site has a picnic table. You'll find restrooms, showers, food service, and supplies available - even WiFi. There are exhibits & programs, hiking loops, nature walks, and swimming availble if you want to do more than just veg out. The draw to Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground: - There's a reason it's so popular - beautiful setting, lots to do, facilities like restrooms & showers
- Forests, waterways, hiking loops
- Proximity to all the other activities in Big Sur - beaches, shops, restaurants, taverns, etc.
PONDEROSA CAMPGROUND Ponderosa Campground is a family campground with campsites nestled along the Nacimiento River trout stream under the trees, about 13 miles east of Highway 1, taking the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road to County Road G-14. Ponderosa is open year-round and is first-come, first served, although you can make reservations 6 months in advance for May 1st to September 30th. There are 23 sites at this Big Sur streamside campground(unfortunately, RVs are not advised), and each campsite has a fire ring, a picnic table, and a pedestal grill. It's advisable to keep your food secured here as the raccoons are rather pesky about getting into your supplies! There is drinkable water available from Spring Break to Thanksgiving. The draw at Ponderosa Campground: - The Nacimiento River with its trout fishing & places for a cool dip
- Camping in the forest
- Hiking opportunities
- And nearby Mission San Antonio, with its museum, chapel, Indian graveyard, & aquaducts
