The stunning seascapes that sit alongside the Northern Californian coastal roads are an event in themselves.

Those visiting the area will want to ensure that they bring along their digital cameras in order to capture the coastline in all its natural glory.

Driving the Northern California coast makes a great choice of road trip with a number of intriguing sites and attractions along this spectacular scenic route.

MORE TOP NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ATTRACTIONS

Top Northern California attractions for you to see in the area include:

  • Mendocino County - just a couple of hours north of the Bay Area and San Francisco lies Mendocino County, an oasis of green vineyards and beautiful beaches.

Drive the world famous Pacific Highway 1 along its beautiful coast, or enjoy a tipple from one the regional wine producers at the many viticulture showrooms along the way.

  • Redwood National and State Parks - Northern California is home to
the Redwood National and State Parks - where the largest tress on earth live. Active types can enjoy an exciting array of hiking routes in these areas, while others may prefer the arboreal oddities on display at attractions such as Trees of Mystery in Klamath, home to the Cathedral Tree (a mind boggling giant nine-tree structure) or the stunning Avenue of the Giants with its amazing Drive Thru Trees.

The parks also offer an exciting opportunity to spot local wildlife in
its natural habitat - from bald eagles to black bears and even the occasional cougar. Visitors should, however be aware of safety practices such as disposing of bear-bait trash responsibly and keeping young children in sight at all times.

  • Humboldt County - a little piece of old style California, which is surprisingly easy to get to from the Bay Area. Humboldt County is a quaint area offering an alternative Californian experience with attractions such as Confusion Hill, Gravity House, and the Samoa Cookhouse, the oldest surviving cookhouse in the West.
  • Sonoma - another stunning wine producing county in Northern California, Sonoma is home to more than 300 wineries as well as offering coastal attractions at Bodega Bay such as surfing and kayaking. History buffs may enjoy a visit to Fort Ross State Historic Park with its reconstructed stockade.
