I don't know about you, but even during bountiful times I think it's fun to discover things we can do without spending much money. And right now, it's imperative that we find free things to do! So here are 5 of my favorite Big Sur free things for you to try:
Relax! It's the Number One thing to do in Big Sur!! Relax on the beach; relax amongst the redwoods; relax along the Big Sur River; relax in the wilderness. Take advantage of the Big Sur laid-back vibe, bring a picnic, find yourself a quiet spot, & leave your worries behind you.
Browse the Henry Miller Library, the shops of Big Sur Village, the many art & jewelry galleries; explore Nepenthe & the Phoenix Shop; visit the State Parks & the historical sites; take a ranger-guided walk. Looking & listening doesn't cost a penny!
Take a drive & enjoy the views - not just along the coast, but take the little side & back roads, wind in and out of the hidden neighborhoods. You'll discover some beautiful homes with lovely landscaping and other secret treasures that most people miss.
Go for a hike - along the river, along the beach, into the redwood forest, atop the ridges. While hiking, keep your senses alert for the other critters that share Big Sur with us - hundreds of species of birds, including the California Condor; whales, otters, & many other varieties of sealife; deer, banana slugs, coyotes, mountain lions & more!
Visit the well-preserved Mission San Antonio de Padua - it's a bit of an effort to get there, but well worth the trip! It was one of the most successful of the Spanish missions, and it resides in a pristine setting of idyllic grassland, creeks, & live oaks - looking much as all the missions looked during the 18th Century.
So there you have it - 5 varied & interesting free things to do in Big Sur, California! And in these economically uncertain times, free things can mean the difference between exploring your world & being stuck at home!
